Popular 'Tribes' gay spoof returns for a seventh run
by Kaizaad Kotwal
Columbus-Act Out Productions is presenting, by popular demand, their seventh production of Tribes 2001. This is the 15th anniversary of this very popular show.
In essence, the idea behind Tribes is, according to Frank Barnhart, “like a gay Saturday Night Live."
Barnhart, who is artistic director of Act Out Productions, explained that initially Tribes was presented by Reality Theatre and is now being produced by his current company. Originally, the show was presented every two
years but "because of the amazing success of last year's Tribes we have decided to do this one back to back."
Last year, Tribes 2000 was presented at the Out on Main res-
taurant while this
Kennedy. Barnhart is also doubling as the show's director.
The group will be spoofing everything from the Log Cabin and Democratic gays to reality TV shows and soap operas. One of the sketches will be titled "Big Sister," after the Big Brother TV show. Another satire will take on the popular television shows Survivor, The Weakest Link, and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, all in one.

year's incarnation will be presented at the Axis nightclub in Columbus.
"The Out on Main venue was not available this year," explained Barnhart, "and last year, because of the restaurant's capacity of eighty or so, we had to turn a lot of people away."
Axis seats about 125 people with more room available for standing patrons.
Tribes 2001 is a collection of sketches and songs, all with a comedic bent, spoofing local and national gay issues. When the first Tribes was launched in 1986 by Barnhart and Dee Shepard, it was a combination of comedic and dramatic pieces.
"We realized," said Barnhart, "that what seemed to stick with the audiences were the funnier pieces."
This year's show will run 90 minutes with a 15 minute intermission. The Axis space is very conducive to this sort of theatre, according to Barnhart, because "it has all the technology that we need and because of the setup we don't need to do elaborate sets as such."
This year's cast of eight, identical to last year's, includes Barnhart, Jim Speagle, Roger Whitaker, Stewart Bender, Dee Shepard, Beth Kattleman, Dovie Pettitt and Linda Lee
"One of our sketches, called 'Gay for Pay,'" said Barnhart, "will include poking fun at straight actors who play gay characters on television."
A skit about a psychic sexual hotline is "about sex chats where they know what you want before you even ask."

From the recurring repertory of skits, this years' show will include "Clintonville 43202." Barnhart explained that Clintonville, an area north of downtown Columbus, has "the highest per capita lesbian population of any neighborhood in the country." "Clintonville 43202" is a lesbian soap opera spoof and this year's episode will deal with the demise of the popular show Xena: Warrior Princess.
Barnhart believes that today, with the mainstream success of shows like Will and Grace, Tribes 2001 will appeal to gay and straight audiences alike.
Tribes 2001 will run at Axis, 775 N. High Street,
June 1-2, 8-10, 15, 17, 21-22, and 2930. All shows are at 8 p.m. except for the June 22 show, which is at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 for all seats. Call 614-263-9448 for reservations.
